Audubon Name Consideration Survey
Start
Hello:
There is an ongoing conversation within the Audubon community about the complicated legacy of John James Audubon and whether his name is a barrier to creating a more inclusive and diverse community. After a year of studying the issue, the National Audubon Society announced on March 15, 2023 that they will not be removing “Audubon" from their name. Separately, many state and local Audubon chapters have also considered whether to include “Audubon” in their names. As part of Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter’s (BRAC) journey to becoming a more diverse and inclusive organization, we have launched our own formal process to evaluate the impact the name “Audubon” has on the community within which we live and bird, and how it affects our ability to fully execute our mission in service of our community.
As part of this process, we want to hear from you, our members, volunteers, partners, donors, program participants, and potential future partners. We invite you to participate in the following short survey to let us know how you feel about this issue. Your answers will help Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter make its decision about whether to continue using Audubon in the name. The survey should take less than 10 minutes of your time, and your responses will be anonymous. Our approach is similar to that of Georgia Audubon’s effort, and more information on John James Audubon and more about this approach may be found at
